Welcome to 'About Mike's Web Site', the purpose of which is to let you know about the reasons, tools & methods I have used to create my site along with the odd tip.

Why I created the site?

bullet

This site was initially created so I could let Family & Friends around the world keep up to date with the photographic progress of our Grandchildren Ben, Charlotte, Chloe and Finlay but has developed into a little more than just that, also included are:

Web Authoring.

bulletMy Web site was created using Microsoft FrontPage 2002 which as a novice to Web Authoring I find very user friendly, the great advantage is that I don't have to worry about writing any codes (HTML).
bulletSome of the facilities in Microsoft FrontPage 2002 are not able to function such as the Visitors Counter and the Guestbook so I have recruited the aid of www.bravenet.com which is free(100mb web space), all you have to do is join, this gives them the right to put a few unobtrusive adverts at the top of their page.
bulletUploading & Updating my Web Site is quick & easy to BT Internet which has not presented any problems!.
bulletI have now subscribed to the www.bravenet.com Bronze scheme, this enables me to increase my web page capacity to 5GB.

Photo Images.

Pages best viewed with a 17" (or bigger) Screen Resolution of 1080 x 1024 pixels.

bulletMy photo's were taken with the following:
bulletSome of the older photo's were originally slides and converted to digital images with the aid of an adapter on my scanner.
bullet Pentax SF7 and scanned into jpeg format Scanner (set on 600dpi).
bullet Fujipix 1300 digital camera, this is Fuji's lower range camera but set on Fine (1280 x 960) pixels produces images in jpeg format that are more than adequate for showing on the web.
bullet Fujipix 6800 Zoom digital camera.
bullet Fujipix S5600 Zoom digital camera.
bulletSome images are cleaned up with the aid of PhotoSuit, part of the Roxio package, this helps me remove 'red eye',  'unwanted objects' from the background, it also lets me have some fun 'cloning' people.

My Computer.

bulletMy 'beige box' is what brings it all together, I won't go into the nitty gritty of it all other than the fact that I built it myself and is constantly being upgraded so by time you read this another bit would of changed!.
bulletI do use a 'Swap Multi Caddy' system this allows me to keep my different projects separate i.e. I have hard disks for the Web, Photo images, General work, Visual Basic etc.  Using this system reduces the risk of loosing it all in the event of a catastrophic disk failure, as long as I Backup my work I can 'sleep at night'.
bulletBuilding your own computer isn't as difficult as you may think, with the right contacts (thanks Steve P) you can get the parts and knowledge to put together a machine that suits your needs, this has the added bonus of understanding what is going on 'under the bonnet'.

My Computer Knowledge.

bulletMostly self taut by spending hrs/days/months/years fettling away, I enjoy the challenge of getting it right (eventually).  Although I do have Diplomas in software applications (Word Processing, Data Base, Spreadsheets, Visual Basic Programming & Desktop Publishing).

bulletIn most cases I find if something has gone 'pear shaped' it is a hardware fault, there are times when I have spent hrs or a day trying to figure out something like why I can't get connected to the Web when all of the time it was the phone plug had become loose!.
bulletIt doesn't matter how old you are to use a computer, I have built one for an uncle and he's in his 70's.

Thank You for visiting.
